marsh bound.....

Another view of the marsh off the back river of Tybee Island. I have been on a purple/orange painting kick lately and this little palette knife painting shows it. I am headed to Savannah for a couple of days and can take a break from thinking and painting the marsh and have the real thing in front of me.....I can't wait!  I won't be taking my paints this trip but will be taking lots of pictures for inspiration.

down the path

cottage path

This is a little sunlit path to the beach between cottages on Tybee Island.  I love classic old bungalow beach houses.  They have so much personality. The pathway that I painted is a bit broken in places, not straight for more than two feet at a time and is made up of all sorts of paving materials mixed with a bit of beach sand here and there.  Makes you want to wander down it though....and see what's just around the bend.

a view through the trees
6"x 8" oil on canvas
©2011 DottieLeatherwood

This is a study for a larger painting that I am about to begin.  Its a view out onto the marsh through a break in the trees.  I love the overgrown feeling of the woods at the edge of the marsh and the spanish moss dripping from every available limb. I like the way the dark cool trees frame the glowing marsh beyond.  The best thing about mosquitoes to swat at!

This kitten lives at the horse stable where my daughter rides.  He has a ton of personality and will not be denied the attention he feels is due him.  He was following me around one evening while I was taking pictures, doing his best to distract me.  I think he was looking for a little time in front of the camera.  Anyway, he sat down nearby to bathe and give himself a good scratch behind the ears when suddenly he paused mid scratch to glare at something in the grass in front of him.  Whatever he was looking at must only be visible to cat eyes because I saw nothing!  He stared intently with his glowing yellow eyes at the grass and held the pose for several minutes.  I couldn't resist taking his picture.  I guess he conned me into a photo shoot after all. Maybe I should have titled this painting "persistence" instead!

A Pearl of an Oyster

This was a commission for a friend.  She wanted her oyster shell accessorized with a pearl.  Who wouldn't?  Well, unless you actually bite down on the pearl while eating the oyster, which happened to me once, years ago at an oyster roast.  Luckily, no chipped tooth and I was excited to find a pearl.  Unluckily, I put it on the side of my plate while I finished eating and promptly forgot it. Hours after we left the oyster roast, I remembered.  But I still figured it was a lucky sign and it had been a great evening spent with some of my favorite people so..... as things go, it wasn't a big loss.  Easier to keep up with a pearl in a painting than real life, I suppose!

Old Docks...Old Neighbors ...SOLD

old docks

Old docks are like old neighbors.... comfortable, kinda close, bumping into each other every so often.  They've seen a lot of people come and go and weathered many a storm side by side.  They aren't ashamed to just hang out without getting all fixed up.  And they always enjoy a cool breeze, calm waters and a good sunset.

knee deep

I am a member of Daily Paintworks , a website of original artwork by over 300 artists for sale and auction.  It is a great site, chock full of tons of great original artwork at fabulous prices.  Every week they issue a challenge to artists.  This week the challenge was "the color of music" essence, paint a piece of music..interpret the words and melody with paint.  I have been playing a lot of  Zac Brown in the studio lately, probably because it is good "sitting on the beach" music and that's what I'd like to be doing.  The song I chose to paint was "Knee Deep", a great "sitting on the beach" song by Zac Brown and Jimmy Buffett.  I grabbed a panel and did a quick little palette knife painting while the song was playing.  My painting refers to the line in the chorus "Knee deep in the water somewhere, got blue sky...breeze blowing through my hair, only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair".  That's my new goal in life (or maybe for the rest of the summer)....not worrying about anything else but the tide reaching my chair!

High Tide at Noon... SOLD

Everything good comes in the saying goes.  This is the last of the three "re-creation" palette knife paintings this week.  It is a view of the marsh at high tide not far from where I grew up.  Can you smell the salt air and feel the breeze in your hair? I almost can!

a lovely oceanview

Here is the second of the palette knife paintings that I "recreated" from another painting.  A lovely view of the ocean in the distance from the dunes on Tybee Island.  Painting it is the next best thing to being there. (big sigh)

Monday afternoon quiz:
True or False?  ...the longer the dog's nose ..the more curious it is...
I can't tell if the puppy wants to participate in the sandcastle building or is just waiting for something good to be dug up.  Whatever the case, I love puppy dog ears blowing in the wind and the smile of contentment on a child's face at the beach.

Picked a flower from my garden while walking to my studio early this morning and couldn't resist the temptation to paint its cheerful face.

Lazy, Hazy Days in July

marsh in the haze

A sunset view of the marsh at high tide.  One of those hazy summer days in July, you know the kind ... when everything has soft warm edges, one surface just sort of fades into another as far as the eye can see. The sun is just a big buttery glow in the sky. Air is thick and salty and you feel almost like you need gills to breathe.  Would that be a tall frosty glass of sweet tea you are craving right now.... or an iced down bottle of beer?

Life is Good Today .... SOLD

life is good today

Took my kids to see the Zac Brown Band a couple of nights ago.  Perfect summertime music, turned up loud, top down on the jeep, life is good kind of stuff.  We had a great time and I have had a couple of his songs just going round and round in my brain ever since.  So I decided to paint one.
