We are heading to the coast for Thanksgiving...you know "over the river and through the marsh"...  With that on my mind, thought I would post a painting I did this summer.  These two were hunkered down for a long afternoon of fishing. Dad looked as content as he could be.  His son, on the other hand, was running low on interest.

Sentry On The Bluff

30" x 40" oil on canvas

This is a commission for a friend.  An old live oak keeping watch over the river. There are a lot of really cool colors that didn't quite translate from painting to photo and great palette knife texture to boot!  All I want for Christmas is a new camera...   :)

Old Oak Path

There is this great property on Tybee Island that has some ancient gnarled oaks lining a pathway to the beach.  Scenes like this used to be much more common.  Tourism and construction are wonderful for the economy but sometimes not so much for old beach properties.  I wanted to capture this little bird's eye view in case it too, disappears one day.

California or bust....

evening light
6" x 6" oil on panel

This painting was accepted into the Randy Higbee 6 x 6 Show in California!!  I got the notification last night and was so excited!! Sitting in my studio, day after day painting away, there are times when I am scraping off more paint from the canvas than I am putting on.  I question if I am where I am supposed to be...doing what I am supposed to do.  I know we all feel that way sometimes.  Moments like these are so affirming and motivating....make all the angst worthwhile.  I also found out that  two of my paintings were accepted to a local gallery show here in Charlotte this week too.  It has been a very, very good week!  I am so happy that all those hours painting and scraping are starting to pay off!!  Got to go send this one on it's way to Orange County! WOO HOO!  :)

I have been working on several large paintings lately, which is a good thing, but I did sit down on Saturday and paint this small one.  I love the loose feel of this  and the road disappearing around the bend. Not exactly sure where it might be headed or even if its headed anywhere.  I was happy with the way this turned out, although my photograph of it seems darker than the painting itself.  I sure hope Santa is reading my blog and brings me a new camera.......

Throwing a change-up....

reflections on autumn
20" x 30" oil on canvas

-----------------------------------
I'm throwing a change-up into the mix this week.  Lately my postings have been of more traditional paintings but I decided to throw in a little something different.  This is an abstracted view of water or rather the reflections in it.  I love the colorful reflections on the forever rippling, swirling, bouncing surface of seawater.  It was great fun to work on and a nice change of pace.  I enjoyed it so much I think I will work on a series of these..maybe on much larger canvases.

Shrimp Boats... SOLD

The Agnes Marie
8" x 8" oil on panel

SOLD
----------------------------------------
I love shrimpboats.  Rusty and crusty and hardworking boats.  They remind me of my childhood and of the families I knew growing up who worked the waters off the coast of Savannah.  So few still take on this way of life. In fact, I don't think any of my friends followed their fathers into shrimping.   It is much easier to make money doing something else. As my dad would have said "its an awful hard way to make a living".  It is a rough life and it has to be a part of your soul to subject yourself to the elements day in and day out without the guarantee of catching anything.  Not to mention trying to compete with imported or farmed shrimp sold at such low prices. I do what little I can to support local shrimpers and always buy wild caught shrimp.  There is nothing that compares to the taste of fresh, sweet shrimp right off the boat.  Lecture over.  The Agnes Marie is docked and in for the night.
