Leaping through Leap Day

Some days the blog posts just write themselves....  I was working on a larger painting this morning and just couldn't get it going the way I wanted so I put it aside and pulled out a smaller panel to work on.  I was thinking about it being "Leap Day" today and that made me think about deer (don't ask...just the way my mind works) so I thought I would paint a deer on Leap Day. Seemed logical at the time.  Now, cut to this afternoon...my two oldest kids came home from school all excited about their day.  It seems a deer had leaped through a classroom window at their high school this morning. While class was in session!  Are you following.... my deer painting ...deer leaping through window...leap day.  I told you, some days the blog posts just write themselves!!

Rainy Days & Mondays....

feeling blue

"Rainy days and Mondays always get me down".....so goes the song.  My dog agrees.  A rainy day means that he has to stay inside my studio with me instead of his usual in and out routine.  He finds it very boring.  Lots of long sighs and flopping into new positions on the floor. Oh, and the eye-rolling and looking pitiful  is in high gear.  Every once in a while he'll throw in a little "paw on the leg" to try and get me to relax my rule. However,  a wet dog leads to mud splattered canvases when he decides to come inside the studio for a nap.  That has happened one too many times. I started out this morning to paint something else but I just couldn't resist his sad face.  He's hoping for sun tomorrow.

Just trucking along....

I saw this cool old (or should I say "vintage") truck parked by the curb early one morning while I was taking my son to school.  The wonderful sea-green paint combined with the killer reflection on the pavement made me do a u-turn and go back to take a picture.  I hope you like the composition and color as much as I do. It is fresh off the easel this afternoon!

Studying Trees.... SOLD

oak silhouette study

SOLD

This is a study I did today for a much larger painting. I love old live oak trees with their expressive branches.   This one is silhouetted against the sun so it is even more dramatic than usual.  I can't wait to start a much larger detailed version!

Just Hanging Out

These two guys are just hanging out at the fence rail waiting patiently on a treat.  They seem very confident that it is only a matter of time until an apple slice or a carrot materializes in front of them.  I started this painting at my workshop last week and put the finishing touches on it today.   It is for sale and will be dry and ready to ship next week!

Back to Work....

Leslie Saeta & Dreama Tolle Perry

my painting posse

I spent last week in a  Five Day Painting and Motivational Workshop with Leslie Saeta and Dreama Tolle Perry In Atlanta, GA.  It was a phenomenal experience!  Painting and Marketing Boot Camp! I learned so much and met some wonderful friends!  Dreama and Leslie are such wonderful, caring artists and have so much information to share.  They also feed you dinner (homemade!!) which is crazy good! I just can't say enough great things about this workshop. So even though I haven't been posting, I have been working! Here are some of my workshop paintings....some finished, some not....
Back to reality and the studio this week.  I have redesigned  my blog a bit and have been working on a couple of other marketing projects that I had on the back burner. I'm heading out now to my studio to paint.... it's going to seem so quiet!  Missing all my Atlanta girls!

A Non-Representational Kind of Day....

untitled
22" x 28" oil on canvas

Today was a play day.  Every so often it is good to do a little something to clear my mind....give myself a different creative perspective.  I am by nature very production-oriented.  A artist friend of mine says I crank out paintings like someone cranks out widgets.  He's right.  I love a finished painting.  And I love to paint.  Which means that I produce a lot of work.  Not every one of them is a keeper but the odds are usually on my side.  I wanted to do something totally different today. Non-Representational. Abstract. Fun.

I was treated to this view early one morning  this fall while taking my dog for a walk.  The shadows of the palms against the little church were so distinct...almost if someone had painted them on.  For anyone that's interested this is the Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church in Tybee Island, GA.

a change of pace...

I was going through some of my paintings, moving things around in my studio, when I came across this one.  I painted it last summer and had kind of forgotten about it.  Cows are one of my favorite subjects to paint.  I thought I would post it as a nice change of pace from all the water that has been flowing through my blog posts lately :)

On another note, my son drew the winner of the 100th blog post and it is .............Paige C.!  So Paige, email me which painting you want and I will get it on its way!  Happy Tuesday Everyone!

100th Blog Post...YAY!

triple play
24" x 30" oil on canvas

Not one, not two but three waves all lined up to come ashore.  I loved the composition of these waves back lit by the morning sun with lots of foam and spray to spare.  How lucky could a sea lover get?

On another note, today is my 100th blog post!  I started blogging last June.  I had never even read a blog before I started mine. There was a whole world out there that I didn't even know existed! It has been so much fun meeting other artists and art lovers in cyberspace.  The world has truly become so small and I have learned so much.  To celebrate my 100th post I decided to give away one of my small paintings.  I will draw the winner on Monday and post it on my blog on Tuesday.  To enter either 1) sign up to receive my blog by email (there is a little box to the right of this column where you can do that) or 2) if you already subscribe to my blog send me an email to let me know you want to enter to win. ( dtl.art@gmail.com). The winner will get to choose either one of the paintings below:

heart of a shell
6"x6"
field in early summer
5" x 7"
