lake reflections

I spent last weekend at a friend's lake house and spent half my time watching the reflections in the water.  The water was so clean and clear and the reflections so crisp.  I must have taken a thousand pictures.... but I really wish that I had taken my paints!  I just love trying to capture the abstract shapes and colors and the fluidity of the water.

I was wishing for the cool lake water today, as the temperature outside today is 104 degrees!  The little air conditioner in my studio just can't keep pace with that kind of heat.  I decided it was a good day to take off early.  I guess summer is definitely making it's presence known!

the lifeguards... SOLD

These characters were perched up on the sign at the "no swimming end" of the beach last summer.   They were very serious about their job as lifeguards and as you can see the bird on the right is about to take flight for a possible rescue situation.  I had the beach all to myself on a morning walk and I couldn't have asked for better models for my photo shoot :)  If you would like to have these lifeguards for your very own click the link above and you will go directly to my website where you may purchase them.

high tide line..... SOLD

high tide line

This one is hot off the easel...finished only a couple of hours ago.  I loved the composition.  Very simple but a lot of color variation and brushstrokes...a lot of which doesn't show up in this photo.  Some paintings photograph well and others just lose something in the translation.

This painting was inspired by a trip to Kiawah this spring.  Some friends and I were riding bikes on the beach and missed our path off the beach.  So we had to turn around and ride back into the wind at high tide.  Suffice it to say, pedaling twice as hard, I was almost going backwards.   At the point I thought I was about to have a heart attack, I decided to get off the bike and walk for a while.  So I got to take in the lovely dunes and  beach grass and think about painting while I caught my breath.  It was definitely the silver lining to the exhausting bike ride :)

I have been working on a series of landscapes lately (more on those to come in my newsletter) but I decided to take a break and paint something a little different.  I loved playing around with the color in this one.  I think this guy is actually pointing toward the weekend....what do you think?

On a related note, if you haven't signed up for my email newsletter.....please do!  My next issue will be coming out at the end of the month and word on the web is that I will be giving away a small painting to a lucky subscriber.....don't miss out!  It's easy to sign up.....the link is just to your right or you can click here  :)  Have a great weekend!!

This is the last of the series of plein air paintings of water lilies that I completed last week.  It was a beautiful sunny day (unlike today!!) and I just couldn't stay in my studio and paint!  Today, however, I am in the studio to avoid the nasty, gloomy weather outside.

play me a melody...

Not For Sale

Bittersweet.  This last week has combined celebration with an ever present lump in the back of my throat.  My oldest and only daughter graduates from high school on Monday. Happiness and hope are thrown together with all the memories of the last eighteen years.

And this is Melody.  She is my daughter's favorite creature on the planet.  My daughter, Caelyn, was bitten by the same "horse bug" that bit me as a child.  She has been riding for years and lives for her time on the back of a horse.  Melody, is her favorite.  Melody is ornery and stubborn and prone to kick and buck.  She doesn't like to mind but she loves my daughter and my girl loves her.  Maybe it's the challenge they both like or just mutual respect.  Melody doesn't know Caelyn will be leaving her soon. She goes about her time thinking the brush and saddle and treats will never end. But Caelyn knows it.  And the "missing" is already evident every time she heads out to ride or mentions Melody's name.  It's strong stuff the love that a girl has for a horse.

Endings and new beginnings. We all have them. Caelyn has an exciting road ahead of her.  She's hopeful and happy and ready to go.  But the happiness  is tinged with the bittersweet love for a horse and everything else that she leaves behind her from her life as it has always been. Melody and I are really gonna miss our girl.

landing pad.....

How about a landing pad of a lily pad....or maybe the bulls eye of a lotus flower?  If you are a dragonfly or a bumble bee (both of which were buzzing around my pond when I was painting this) either one could be an ideal spot to rest your wings.

On another note, today marks the one year birthday of my blog!! I wrote my first post on June 5th of last year.  If you would like to check it out, click here . It has been a learning experience and I have really enjoyed connecting with other bloggers, artists and friends throughout this last year!

The weather here this weekend was fabulous!  It was as if we had turned back the calendar to April instead of the screaming hot weather of June.  I was inspired!  I cleaned out and reorganized my studio and then took my easel out to my garden and painted the water lilies in my pond.  This is the first of several plein air paintings that I finished.
