DAY 30!!! ...art's well that ends well

Lessons Learned from 30 Paintings in 30 Days:

*  I did enjoy the theme of "streetscapes" I picked and had fun deciding what and where to paint.  Not sure if I would have stayed with it for a month if it hadn't been for the challenge but the number and variation of paintings I could have painted within this theme was endless.  I feel I only touched the tip of the iceberg and I want to explore it further but in a bigger size which leads me to my second point...

* I don't enjoy painting small.  I picked a size, 6" x 9", for this because I wanted the paintings to have a consistent feel to them when I was done.  I also knew that in order to have a painting finished each day I needed to have a manageable size.  I usually paint much larger and I have really missed that this month! I didn't feel like I had the freedom to explore the subject the way I wanted to sometimes in the smaller paintings.

* I learned I am not up to posting a blog and a painting everyday. I do paint everyday but sometimes my painting isn't finished.  I don't want to post something that isn't done.  It's a lot of pressure to produce a painting a day!  Not to mention sometimes I just had trouble thinking of something interesting to say!!

*  I enjoyed using this as an opportunity to try painting on paper.  I will use it again in the future.  If you are interested in trying it, I used Arches Oil Paper for all of my paintings.

* My most successful paintings (in my opinion) had a color scheme of just two main colors with a third thrown in for an accent.

*   My goal for these was to be really loose and focus on shapes and edges.  As I look back over my paintings I can see several paintings here and there where I tightened up too much.  I had to keep refocusing on my goal.  I learned it is harder to break habits than you would think!

*  I have the best friends!  Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments and likes and keeping me going this month.  Your expectation and excitement and interest in my paintings and where I was headed next were just what I needed to keep plugging on those days when the muse was on vacation.  I couldn't have done it without you!!

So here is my final painting of the series:

Going green... "green lights" that is.  I loved playing with all the different shades of pink in this and the very subtle greens. I like the way the street turned out too.  It is funny sometimes what parts of the painting I like best.  It is usually not the thing I was focused on while I was painting.  That is a lesson all in itself!   Tomorrow is the final day in the series! I can't believe I made it!  This is Day 29 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!

Leaving Athens today.  Thought I would leave you with one last look at downtown.  This is College Avenue across the street from the UGA campus.  Lots of shops and restaurants... including "The Grill", one of the best crusty diners around.  Hope you have enjoyed the trip!

This is another cool old building in downtown Athens.  It has been everything from a furniture store to a  church to a movie theater to a concert hall over the last hundred years.  It is actually a music venue once again but when I was in college, we called it "the draft house".... as in movies and pitchers of beer. It burned several years ago and was fully restored and reopened.  Here is a link if you would like to know more about it:  http://georgiatheatre.com/  I love the old marquee and was really happy with the way this painting turned out.  Four more days to go!

OK...this is not exactly a streetscape.  This is actually the view from my daughter's dorm window looking out over the University of Georgia campus.  You can see Sanford Stadium and several buildings on campus and if you look really close on the right, there is a view of the Journalism building that I spent a lot of my time in while I was a student... many, many years ago :)

I am Athens bound.  Athens, GA, that is.  I love this view as you are approaching downtown Athens, the buildings glowing in the afternoon sun.  Athens will always have a special place in my heart. I loved living there when I went to University of Georgia and I love going back when I get the chance.  So many memories around every corner.  I may just have to stay a couple of days and revisit some of those memories....

So no visit to Atlanta is complete without a trip to see the Braves. Right?  I grew up watching them play and now my kids do.  There is nothing better on a summer evening than a cold beer and a little baseball.  Wishful thinking here in January :)

Day 21 ...stopping in Atlanta

There was a saying that I heard growing up in Savannah, that no matter where you were headed, even if it were heaven or hell, you had to go to Atlanta first. So I thought it only fitting that after ending my painting journey through France and Italy,  I had to make a stop in Atlanta.  I lived in Atlanta when I was a newlywed and loved it.  I worked downtown at the Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed being in the "big city" everyday.  I loved this view of Atlanta, standing on Peachtree Ave, with the CocaCola sign in the distance.

I was listening to AHA radio's interview with painter C. W. Mundy while I was painting and he was talking all about loosening up and making marks so I applied that spirit to my painting today!  Here is the link to that great interview if you missed the show: AHA Radio: CW Mundy

Enough of the rainy weather!  Time for blue skies, sunshine, palm trees and pink and blue houses! Oh and yellow, too! Love the tropical feel of this scene.  Makes me feel right at home. Wishful thinking at the moment with another rainy day here and snowflakes supposedly on the way. Missing my sunshine and warm weather right now!

Even in the rain, France is charming.  The colors of the shops and awnings on this street in Nice were so intense despite the rainy day.
This is the halfway point in the challenge! Day 15!  I have enjoyed my journey so far but I am itching to paint larger paintings.  I am not a "small painting" kind of girl.  It is a constant exercise in editing and restraint for me.  Which I guess is good but I feel like I can't make the big bold brushstrokes that I'm used to making. Instead I find myself turning to the palette knife as a substitute.  I am looking forward to seeing them all together as a series.

A little different feel to the painting today... not quite as loose or "airy" as yesterday's painting.  I loved this narrow little street with the tiniest of sidewalks lined with peach buildings and blue and green shutters.  I wanted to capture the feel of the close buildings surrounding you and towering above.  I like the way it turned out, although with the rainy day we had today my camera didn't quite capture the color of the sky in the painting.  It appears white in the photo but actually has a peach and blue tint to it.  I will try to take another picture tomorrow that will be hopefully truer in color.

Day 12 ...allée à Paris

Day 12.... almost at the halfway point of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days!  Enjoying my little jaunt to Paris.  Found this little alley and was captivated by it. The shops and houses have such great earthy colors. I like the softness and looseness of this one. Just enough color to pull you in.  Perfect for a Sunday morning stroll.

Thought I would have dinner in the North End tonight.  I love the old buildings with all the flags and awnings and the narrow little streets.  Every step is another fabulous mom and pop Italian restaurant.  Food for the eyes and food for the soul .... how perfect of an evening is that?

Late nights and early mornings.  You just can't avoid them sometimes... and would you really want to?  That's the good stuff that life is made of you know.  My grandfather always said "I'll sleep when I'm dead".  I am the same way.... I don't want to miss a thing! I love the rosy pink light of early morning in this painting.  Trucks making deliveries, a few people on the streets and the bagel carts open for business.  Leaving New York this morning, hope you are coming along!

Day 7 ....lights of New York

So what kind of trip would it be if I didn't take time to paint the bright lights of  New York?  No city shines brighter... well at least nowhere that I've been.  This had to be the most fun painting that I have done so far.   I will definitely paint this bigger later on.  I had forgotten how much I love painting on a black background.  I used to  start a lot of paintings that way but have gotten away from that in the last year.  It's funny the habits you get into and the things you forget.  I hope you are enjoying this series as much as I am!

O.K. so this isn't exactly a streetscape.  But you can't blame a girl for wanting to do a little ice skating while she's in New York, can you? And not to brag, but I can skate pretty darn good for a girl from Savannah, Georgia :)  I had fun working with the purples and blues in the late afternoon light. I also wanted to suggest the crowds of skaters and their movement.  This is the ice rink in Bryant Park.... thanks to my wonderful friend and artist Kathy Collins for the picture!  I am extending my stay in New York for a couple more days....stay tuned!

Day 5 ...New York lunch break

Nothing like the sidewalks of New York at lunch.  Everyone in a hurry trying to make the most of the time they have.  I really enjoyed putting in the crowds on the sidewalk in this one.  I was trying for just enough marks to suggest people and movement without getting too detailed.  Less is more, right?

Day 2.....another day in Charlotte....

And so here we are on day 2 of the 30-In-30 Challenge.  And guess what  ..... we are still in Charlotte! Haven't packed my bags yet.  My daughter said, "paint somewhere else ....Charlotte is so boring!"  Isn't that what we all think of our hometown when we are young and anxious to get out into the world?

The wet paint is still catching too much light in the photograph though.  These gray rainy days don't make for good art photography! I am happy with the way this one turned out.  It is a bit more abstract than the one I painted yesterday....which is the direction I wanted to head in with this series. Who knew buildings would be such fun to paint?!

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

And so it begins...

The 30 Paintings in 30 Day Challenge that is!  I am excited to join my friend and artist Leslie Saeta and over two hundred artists from around the world in this challenge for the month of January.  The 30 days in a row wasn't that big of a hurdle for me.  I paint almost every day.   I may not produce a painting everyday because I tend to usually paint large canvases.    Most days, I paint about 6 hours.  Sometimes not consecutively because my time in the studio is woven in and around my life as a mother.  But I find it necessary, at least for me, to paint everyday.  I want to and I need to.   So this challenge for me was about trying something a little different from what I normally do and coming up with a cohesive group of 30 paintings.  I am excited about my theme!  Here's what I have come up with:
 PAPER
I decided to paint on paper.  I paint in oils and have been wanting to try out the new paper by Arches.  I have painted on paper before but this paper doesn't require any preparation... no gesso!! Sounded too good to be true.  It is sold in pads or in large sheets.  As you can see in the pictures above I chose the large sheets and tore my pieces so that all my paintings would be roughly the same size.
MY THEME
So as you can see, I taped the sheets to my drawing board with painters tape because I wanted to leave a clean white border around each painting. The second picture is of my rough in and in the third you can see I am starting to lay in some color.

For my theme, I decided to paint streetscapes. I love painting shapes and patterns and this subject matter is full of both of those.  I also wanted to focus on a loose, dreamy feel.  I had read a while back about a group of painters using google maps to paint from and thought what a cool idea that would be.  So I will be traveling in January to different cities and morphing myself into that little yellow person you drag onto the google maps painting on the street corner.  And the added bonus is that most of the map pictures were taken in the summer so it'll help chase away the winter blues!  So here is my first completed painting...... pardon the glare in places from the wet paint!

So stay tuned for tomorrow.... maybe Charlotte or maybe some place new!And Happy New Year!
