"pail distraction" ...

I got to the studio early this morning with a list of things to do... finish a couple of paintings, frame a couple of paintings, photograph some paintings, etc.  But when I got to the top of the stairs, the sun was illuminating this old french pail full of dried hydrangeas.  What could I do? I caved, put my list on my desk and painted what was in front of me before the morning sun moved on.  A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do, especially when the sun's out  :)

"go with the flow" ...

go with the flow

Love this overhead view of a tied up boat.  But what I really love is the challenge of trying to capture the feeling of the water.  This was a fun painting to do... they aren't all like that and it is wonderful when they are.  I asked for title suggestions on facebook as I was finishing and the one I chose came from my roommate in college.  It seemed to fit the painting itself and the emotions I had while I was painting it.

"lost in a daydream"

$800

It looks like spring outside today, even if it doesn't feel like it.  It is still too cold for my taste but I will take the sunshine and blue sky!   This is actually a much bigger painting of a 6"x 6" painting I did last year.  I loved the image but wanted to paint it larger to play around with the color and brushstrokes a little more. I am happy that spring is more than just a daydream now!   Have a lovely weekend!

"buoy number two" ....

"buoy number two"

I got back in the painting groove this week with this.  I love the combination of red and blue and water is always so much fun to paint. (There are actually some greens in this painting as well but the camera didn't pick up on them for some reason.)

While I was out on a whale watching trip in CA a couple of weeks ago, we sailed past this bright red buoy.  It was an really rough day at sea and both our boat and this buoy were being tossed about in the waves.  In fact, once we got several miles past this buoy, we no longer had the choppy waves you see in this painting, we had big swells and waves crashing over and into the boat. I did get to see some gray whales though, and it was a beautiful sunny day despite the wind and waves.  (Although I was soaked when we got back to the dock!)

barely there...

This little painting is a bit of a departure for me.  Not a lot of intense color here but some really cool "grays".  I wanted to play around with color and shadow and edges and try to pull neutral colored objects out of a neutral colored background.  This piece is kind of  "moody", which actually, was how I felt when I painted it.  Funny how that works!
