"water under the bridge"

I had to look back through my blog posts to see if I had posted this painting.  My memory ain't what it used to be!

One of my favorite things in the world is the marsh.  I love the marshgrass that goes on forever, the movement of the tide in and out, that salty earthy smell and the wide open sky.  It is what I miss the most living where I do now.  I'm not sure I will ever get the salt out of my blood.  Not sure I would want to.

This was one of those paintings that came together, not without effort but fluidly.  "Fell off the brush" as they say.  Wish that happened all the time, but then again there would be no lessons learned, no hard won battles on the canvas :)

This painting is available for purchase at Sozo Gallery.

weekend plein air.....

I took the holiday weekend off ...at least from my studio.  Well, I did paint Saturday morning for a couple of hours in my studio to finish up a painting but Sunday and Monday, I was definitely out of there!

I took the opportunity this weekend, in addition to spending time with my kids, to get out and paint plein air.  I paint a lot on location when I am on vacation or at special events at my gallery here in Charlotte.  I spend my painting hours in the studio working on larger works and it has been a goal of mine this year to get outside and paint more in and around Charlotte.  Plein air paintings just have a different feel to them.  Fresher, softer ....more about the mood of the place.

I spent Sunday morning driving around looking for a spot to paint.  I paint a lot of street scenes and I was looking for a rural spot to paint.  I am continually amazed at how big Charlotte has gotten.  What used to be "out in the country" is now suburban sprawl.  Neighborhoods and shopping centers are springing up like weeds in every direction.  I had to go much further than anticipated but found this little pond behind, yep you guessed it...a newly built shopping center. It was serene and peaceful though and just what I was looking for.

Two funny stories.  As soon as I stopped and parked my jeep, a family of geese started making a beeline from across the pond to where I was setting up.  They climbed out of the water, came over to my easel and checked me out.  After several minutes of waddling around talking to me about the fact I was not feeding them, they left in disgust.

The other story...there were decoy dogs that spun around, set up all around to discourage the geese. Every single time I caught one out of the corner of my eye, it would startle me! Must have happened twenty times.

Here are two of the paintings I finished at this location:

Yesterday, my son had baseball practice at of all places on Memorial Day...Independence Park.  Appropriate, huh?  I knew there was a great view of the Charlotte skyline from the bluff overlooking the baseball fields, so while he practiced... I painted.  Wonderful views...I will definitely go back when I have more time to paint there.  But I was pleased with what I was able to get down in a couple of hours time.

Still working off of my inspiration and painting coastal scenery this week.  This one was so much fun to do.  Lots of paint and lots of color.  I am trying to paint myself back there :)

"the green grass of home"

I have a whole day in the studio today!  You can't imagine how excited I am about that!  I haven't had a day to just paint in three weeks.  Between pulling together the PARTNERS show at Sozo Gallery, high school baseball games and a couple of trips out of town, there has just been no time.  I am totally out of my groove. Today, I attempt to get my groove back.

As excited as I am about the painting time stretched out in front of me today, I was very tempted by something that I heard on the radio just now as I was taking my son to school.  For those of you not in Charlotte, we have a new minor league ballpark uptown.  Brand spanking new.  The views of the skyline from the field are gorgeous. So gorgeous in fact that I went down several weeks before opening day to get photos to paint from.  There is just something about a baseball field.  Guess I have spent a lot of time with them.  Anyway, the temptation today is a game being played at lunchtime and there are tickets available.  How sweet would lunch at the ballpark be on a beautiful sunny day?  I could write it off as inspiration for another painting, right?

Here is the painting that I did from the photos I took back in March.  It is in the show at Sozo Gallery which will have another reception on May 29th if you can make it.

A walk on a spring morning on a busy city street is a glory to behold. The sights and sounds and that incredible light just fills your senses to the brim.  Everything seems to be lit from within. Bursting at the seams after a long winter.  I just love the energy....my fuel for painting.

This is another new work in the show at Sozo Gallery.  Starts tomorrow.  Don't miss it!

This painting is based on a photo I took crossing a bridge early one morning.  It was just beginning to get light and the fog and mist were rising from the river creating these great abstract shapes both near the water and above the trees. Don't you love those fleeting moments where the atmosphere and the scene in front of you changes as you watch?  I love the peacefulness of this painting and the serene blue palette.  A little different than what I usually paint but that's the fun part of it, right?  This painting will be in the exhibition at Sozo Gallery that starts May 8th...just a couple of days away!

I pass this little chapel all the time and it's such a peaceful oasis.  Such an important thing in life...."a peaceful oasis".  Whether yours is a chapel, a place in nature or a porch swing, we all need a place to retreat to and meditate, gather ourselves and regroup to face the challenges life puts in front of us.

This painting will also be in the show at Sozo Gallery starting next week.  Hope you will be my guest!  Details below:
