"September warmth" Day 30

Last painting of the month!  What a joy it has been to paint for a purpose!  Thanks to all of you that have bought paintings from me this month and helped to contribute to the Carter Martin Fund for Childhood Cancer Research.  We can make a difference, a dollar at a time.  I will leave the unsold paintings up until October 7th if you are still trying to make a decision. Here is the link:  Daily Paintworks
Here is the last painting of the month.  I loved trying to capture the ruffled petals of this sunflower and the soft orange of the pumpkin. It has the feeling of the last little bit of warmth of late summer.

Day 29 ... "love nest"

This month is winding down.  Tomorrow is the last day of the 30-in-30 challenge.  I had serious doubts this month that I would get here!  I fell behind and wasn't sure where I would find the time or energy to catch up.  But then I thought about what was pushing me through this challenge.  And I realized just how much time I really did have to do something that mattered.

I used this month as a way to raise awareness and money for children's cancer research.  September is, after all cancer awareness month.  But it was more than that.  The story of a little boy, whom I never knew. A little boy who died twelve years ago ... much too young and leaving so much undone.  A friend I haven't seen since high school. His mother.  And her courage and perseverance to make sure no mother had to lose what she lost.  Her absolute devotion to his memory and to changing the lack of funding in cancer research for children.  A battle that she wages for him and for all of our children.

You can say that everything happens for a reason.  I'm not sure.  I can't make sense of that thought where tragedy is concerned.  It is beyond my understanding.  What I do know is that one person can make a difference.  One person can change the world, the course of history or save the life of people they don't even know.   That is what my friend Leigh Ann Herrin is doing.  And I would like us to help her.

I have painted 30 paintings this month.  Twelve have sold. Thank you so much! I'd love to see them all sell.  For each painting sold, $100 goes to the Carter Martin Fund for childhood cancer research.  If you've had your eye on a painting, this is the time to act.  Here is the link to see all of them:  Daily Paintworks

If you would like to donate directly to the Carter Martin Fund here is the link for that:  Carter Martin Fund

Thanks so much!   Here is the next to the last painting of the month....

Day 27 "flower bucket" and Day 28 "sunflowers and celosia"

I spent the morning painting at the farm.  Sunflowers are still blooming and seem to really be enjoying this hot, humid September weather.  This bright red bucket overflowing with just picked blooms caught my eye.   I had a very limited time to paint it, as the little farm stand was opening soon.  I painted a very loose sketch of all of the flowers and greenery and thought I would finish it up back at my studio.  But when I looked at it again later this afternoon, I loved the freshness of it.  So instead, I just darkened the background and left the flowers and greenery just as they were.

After painting the bucket of flowers, I painted a little corner of the sunflowers still growing in the field.  I loved the way the pinky-purple of the celosia growing nearby set off the yellow of the sunflowers.  Very complimentary :)

"sunshine on a rainy day" ...Day 26

I flew back from Memphis to Charlotte yesterday afternoon and had just enough time to paint these sunflowers before a huge rainstorm hit.  What a month this has been!

Day 25 "green tea"

The last of the hydrangeas...this time in a little silver teapot.  I love the blue sky reflected in the pot and the almost translucent green petals on the hydrangeas.

Another in a series of hydrangeas in a tarnished silver pitcher.  The colors are a little more subdued than yesterday because of the early morning clouds.

Day 23 "easy being green"

Hydrangeas this time of year have lost their blue.  But they are still a beautiful shade of green with purple and orange edges on some of the petals.  Such fun to paint!

Day 22 "flowers, sticks and leaves"

Birds can do so much with so little. This is one of my favorite nests in my little collection.  Mama bird used leaves, mulch, twigs and even a plastic bag to make her nest.  A perfect display for my black-eyed susans.

Day 21 "nesting"

I have a few black-eyed susans left in my garden.  They are such cheery little flowers. I was looking for another "vessel" other than a vase and thought this little nest did the job  nicely.

Day 20 "wishes"

I woke up to the news of more violence today.  Each and everyday seems to be filled with the same thing.  It is heavy on my mind this morning.   I suppose I am naive and a  hopeless dreamer but I just keep praying for peace and love to win out one day.  I can't believe that any other solution will ever work.

Day 18 & 19 "three to get ready" and "four to go"

Almost caught up!  Here are Day 18 and 19 and the last of the roses for the month!  I've enjoyed painting roses this month and trying to capture the essence but not any detail, ie...not every petal!  However,  I need a change so if you love roses, these plus several of the red rose paintings are still available!

If you would like to help support childhood cancer research and get a painting in the process this is your chance.  I will donate $100 for each painting sold this month to the Carter Martin Fund for cancer research for children.

Day 16 & 17....."one for the money" and "two for the show"

My studio mate, gave me the most lovely roses last week and I just had to paint them.  They have stayed fresh and beautiful from buds to full bloom.  I missed getting to paint the bud stage but full bloom is just as beautiful in it's own right.

I will be posting two paintings a day to catch up!  What a month this has been.

Remember, half of the purchase price of any of the 30-in-30 paintings goes to the Carter Martin Fund for childhood cancer research. Over half of the paintings for this month have been sold already! Thank you so much to those of you that have bought one.  I'm hoping to sell all 30 to raise money for such a worthwhile cause.

Day 15 ... "farm flowers"

There is a first time for everything.  I've done six of these challenges and I've always managed to get them painted on time.  Not this year though.  I am two days behind.  I'll catch up but this week I have run out of daylight every day.  It has been a busy week teaching a three day workshop and a one day workshop, not to mention all of the preparation that happens before the workshop ever gets started.

I painted today's painting at the farm where I was teaching. They still have a couple of rows of sunflowers in the field. I'm hoping they last a little longer, so I can get back over there to paint.  I started this one in the morning before my workshop began and finished it up today. An extended session! Then I painted two more and wiped them both out because they just didn't have a spark to them. One step forward and two steps back!

Nevertheless, the show must go on right?  So I will be in catch up mode for the next few days (actually, starting tomorrow...I'm teaching today)  and then I will be in "paint ahead" mode.  I'm leaving for a 5 day trip on Thursday so I really need to get some paintings done and ready to go before I leave.  Ah...the relaxing life of an artist....

Day 14..."charming"

Better late than never.  I am teaching a workshop this week so my painting time is zilch.  I started this one at 6:30 this morning and worked on it for an hour.  Then came home and finished it this evening, just before I ran out of daylight.  In just under the wire!

Day 13 "feeling blue"

I have a very stingy and quite tardy hydrangea.  When all of my others bloomed in May, it offered up nothing.  Not even a suggestion of a flower.  Then last week I noticed one bloom starting to turn blue.  That's it.  Just one.  It is a beautiful bloom but looks rather silly all alone on this big shrub.  I didn't have the heart to pick it but rather painted it as it is, amid a sea of green.

Day 12 "I'm blushing"

I just got back yesterday from taking a four day workshop in Atlanta.... at 3 a.m.  Suffice to say, I'm tired!  I'm teaching two workshops this week, starting on Wednesday so my to-do list is a mile long.  In fact, I got so overwhelmed looking at it this morning, I had to put it away for a few minutes.  I'm not sure how I will get my paintings done this week, so I may not be posting first thing everyday....it might be at midnight instead :)

Day 11 "Sunday softness"

A little break in all of the red rose paintings with a "rose-of-sharon" painting.  I started painting this one very early one morning before the sun had really even risen.  There wasn't a lot of contrast and I enjoyed playing with the edges. I scraped it down several times with the palette knife.  I love the softness and all of the grays.

Day 10 "roses are red"

Once again, I'm not sure which was more fun to paint, the roses or the pitcher.  Loved the turquoise reflections in the tarnished silver.  I bought this little pitcher at Goodwill (my favorite place to buy still life props).  I also had a couple of tarnished silver teapots in my cart as well.  And this very proper,  little old southern lady, came up to me and said "Goodness gracious, my dear, you certainly have your work cut out for you polishing all that silver!" You should have seen the look on her face when I told her I had no intention of polishing it but was buying it because it was tarnished. :)

Day 9 "tarnished"

I had a beautiful bright sunny day to paint this one, and it was great fun playing with the strong darks and lights.  This is my favorite painting so far this month.  I'd love for it to find a great home and you'll be helping me to support cancer research in children too! Did you know that the median age for childhood cancer is 6 years old?  Cancer in young children is very aggressive.  I am donating 50% of the purchase price of every daily painting this month to the Carter Martin Fund for childhood cancer research.  Together we can help change young lives!

Day 7 "roses in a silver pitcher"

I'm painting roses for the next few days.  Love the strong shapes of both the roses and the silver pitcher.  I didn't really concentrate on edges in this painting but instead on once again trying to convey the subject successfully with as little information as possible.  I had such fun with this one today, I can't wait to paint tomorrow's version!

Day 6 "september pinks II"

Another study today of the crepe myrtle flowers.  I love the abstract shapes in both of the studies that I have done of the flowers.  They were so much fun to paint and I really concentrated on keeping them loose and airy.

Three of the six studies of this month have sold!  We are off to a great start raising money for children's cancer research! I am on a mission to sell all of them....Thanks so much for your support!

The crepe myrtles have been so beautiful this year.  The one that shades my patio has bloomed a second time...even prettier than the first time.  It was overcast this morning and I had fun trying to capture the abstract soft pinks against the gray skies.

Day 4 "mason jar bouquet"

A little different arrangement for today.  The pinks were a nice change of pace.  There was no sun today when I painted so the light, although bright was diffused.  I actually enjoy painting landscapes outside in this kind of light but still life is a bit harder.  There isn't a huge wow factor like you get when there is a bright light.

Day 3 "lean on me"

Still working with the little bouquet of sunflowers that I started with a couple of days ago.  You can see from my coffee cup that I am painting these first thing in the morning.  In fact, I set everything up as soon as it is light enough outside to see what I'm doing.

It is a wonderful way to start the day for me.  Painting outside as the world wakes up.  The mornings are starting to be just a little bit cooler and that is a welcome change!

Still working on trying to give only the essential information in these paintings.  I'm finding that really hard to do with sunflowers, though.  The petals are so fun to paint that before I know it I am painting more detail than I set out to paint.

Day 1 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

I can hardly believe it is September!  Can you?  September for me always means the 30-in-30.  I look forward to it and dread it all at the same time! It is always a challenge for me and this month is no different.  But I also love the challenge and each time I do it, I learn so much.   This time, I decided I wanted to do something a little different.  It's been such a wonderful year for me and I wanted to give a little something back.  What better time than now?!

This 30-in-30 is going to be more special than all of the rest.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in children? One of my friends from high school lost her sweet son, Carter, in September twelve years ago at the tender age of 7 to cancer. Since then, my friend, Leigh Ann has become a warrior for raising money for cancer research for children. Only 4% (only $195 million) of our federal government's National Cancer Institute budget ($4.9 billion) is given to childhood cancer research and it's simply not enough. I have three healthy children and I want to help. And here is how:

I will be painting 30 floral still life paintings this month. They will all be 10" x 10" and will be for sale for $200 each. I will donate $100 for each painting sold to the Carter Martin Fund for cancer research for children. If you would like to help support childhood cancer research and get a painting in the process, please watch my blog and/or Facebook page each day for a new painting. I really want to try and sell each and every painting this month and donate $3000 to Carter's Fund.

To kick off the month, here is my first painting.  I chose sunflowers because they remind me of my friend, Leigh Ann and CURE Childhood Cancer.  I'm working this month on a looser, more impressionistic approach to my still life paintings.  Just the essence.  I will also be painting each of them outdoors in natural light.  So unlike a still life painting in the studio in which the lighting is controlled and manipulated for the best painting setup, being outdoors ...sometimes I will have sunlight and shadow to work with and other days just an overcast light.  It's a much more natural setting but also a bit more of a challenge.  I'm sure I will learn a lot this month!
